Land clearing in Clayton starts with the slope. NRCS soil maps show the ground inside the city limits is mostly Hayesville and Bradson fine sandy loam. More than half of it sits on 10 to 25 percent slopes. Left alone, a mountain lot fills in with rhododendron, laurel, briars and saplings until you cannot walk through it.
Wall Land Solutions is based in Toccoa, and Clayton is part of our service area, about 29 road miles north. Our track loader and our mini excavator both run a forestry mulcher head. Forestry mulching grinds brush in place, and underbrushing clears the growth under the big trees. Call or text (678) 776-8002 for a free estimate.

Rain, for a start. The Clayton weather station averages about 72 inches of rain a year in NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals. Toccoa averages about 59. On a steep lot, bare ground washes in a hard mountain storm.
The soils add to it. Under the topsoil, the Hayesville and Bradson soils in town carry a red, clayey subsoil. The Saluda soils on the steeper ground are shallow, with rock close to the surface.
That is why we mulch on these slopes. The mulcher cuts brush to the ground, and the roots stay in the soil. The chips stay on the slope as a layer of ground cover.
Much of Rabun County is second-home country. The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey counts more than 1 in 4 county homes as seasonal or occasional-use homes. Inside the Clayton city limits, it is about 1 in 20.
A lot that sits empty between visits grows over fast. We cut the brush back from the cabin and clear under the trees to open the view. Building new? Our site preparation for a cabin clears the house spot and the drive and keeps the mature trees you choose.
Lake Burton and Lake Rabun, each about 9 miles from town, are Georgia Power lakes. Georgia Power bars unauthorized clearing on its project lands or within 25 feet of the shoreline, whichever is greater. Its North Georgia lakes office in Lakemont handles permits for work on its land. Settle that permit before any brush comes out near the water.
Inside the city limits, the City of Clayton issues land disturbance permits. Outside them, Rabun County Planning and Zoning does. Both are on Georgia EPD's list of local issuing authorities. Ask the right office before a machine shows up.
Georgia's erosion permit rule starts at one acre of disturbed ground. Work within 200 feet of a creek can need a permit even under an acre. State rules set a 25-foot buffer along most creeks and 50 feet along trout streams. Stekoa Creek and Scott Creek both run through town.
Georgia's mountain protection rules reach land at 2,200 feet or higher. They cover ground with slopes of 25 percent or more for at least 500 feet. Black Rock Mountain State Park, just north of town, climbs to 3,640 feet. Ask the permit office about your tract before any grading.
If you own hunting land around Clayton, the mulcher can open it up. We clear food plots and trails and reopen lanes that have grown shut. The mini excavator with its mulching head reaches banks and slopes the track loader cannot.
Steep gravel drives take a beating in mountain rain. Water runs down the ruts and carries the gravel off. Gravel driveway repair regrades and re-crowns the drive so water runs off the side. We spread and grade the new gravel your supplier delivers.
