Hartwell is the Hart County seat, and the county holds about 222 miles of Lake Hartwell shoreline. Land clearing in Hartwell covers lake lots under pines and hardwoods. It also covers pasture and farm woods on rolling red clay hills. Leave that ground alone for a few seasons and privet and sweetgum saplings take over, fence rows first.
Wall Land Solutions is based in Toccoa, and Hartwell is part of our service area. We run a track loader and a mini excavator, each with a forestry mulcher head. Those two machines do our land clearing in Northeast Georgia, and the brush gets ground into mulch where it stands. Call or text (678) 776-8002 for a free estimate on your Hart County land.

Lake Hartwell is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lake, built between 1955 and 1963 behind the Hartwell Dam. It straddles the Georgia and South Carolina line. The Corps holds the land around the water up to a marked government boundary line. Everything below that line is public land, even where it sits between a yard and the lake.
Trees near the line carry orange or red paint marks. The Corps calls them witness trees, and they sit near the line rather than on it. A property survey settles exactly where your lot ends. Clearing or underbrushing on the public side takes a Shoreline Use Permit, and some shoreline zones allow none.
The lot owner applies through the Corps lake office in Hartwell, and a ranger inspects the site. Nothing gets cut on public land until the signed permit is in hand. On the private ground above the line, underbrushing clears out the privet and briars while the pines and hardwoods stay. The woods open up, and you can see through them again.
Hart County is farm country. The 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 547 farms on about 70,000 acres. Those farms hold about 18,000 acres of pasture and about 15,000 acres of woods. Hay is the top crop by acreage, and the census counted 13,200 cattle and calves.
Brush wins first along the wire. Privet and briars climb the fence, and sweetgum and pine saplings fill in behind them. Fence line clearing mulches that growth back so a fence can be repaired or rebuilt. The same work opens property lines and the utility right-of-ways that cross a farm.
When a whole field has gone to brush, bush hogging with a heavy brush cutter takes it back to pasture. Where saplings have grown past the cutter, forestry mulching grinds them down in place. State erosion law exempts agricultural operations and forestry practices, with conditions. Whether a given job fits is a question for the EPD office.
Building permits depend on which side of the city limits your land sits. The Hart County permitting office covers the unincorporated county, and it does not issue permits inside Hartwell. Inside the city, the county sends builders to the City Building Inspector. The city code also holds any land disturbing work in town to the state Erosion and Sedimentation Act.
By the state's current list, neither Hartwell nor Hart County runs its own erosion permit program. That side goes to the Northeast District office of Georgia EPD. State law counts clearing and grading as land disturbance. Most jobs under one acre are exempt, but not within 200 feet of the bank of state waters.
State waters include the lake and its year-round creeks, and ponds count too. The law also keeps a 25 foot buffer of natural cover along the banks of state waters. Our work stays out of that buffer unless a permit allows it. We look over your ground and point you to the right office before work starts.
The NRCS soil survey for Hart County maps mostly Madison and Cecil soils, with some Appling in the mix. Most of it is sandy loam over a red clay subsoil, and much of it is mapped as eroded. Plenty of it sits on 10 to 25 percent slopes.
Bare red clay washes fast in a hard summer storm, so mulching leaves the cut brush on top as cover. The county describes the Paynes Creek Campground on the lake as steep to moderately sloping, under mixed pines and hardwoods. On ground like that, our mini excavator runs a mulching head on banks the loader cannot reach.
The City of Hartwell now runs Hartwell Lakeside Park, the old Hart State Park. From town, Reed Creek Highway, Anderson Highway, Royston Highway and Bowersville Highway lead out to lake lots and farm ground. All of it sits inside the roughly 60 miles we cover around Toccoa.
