Land Clearing, Forestry Mulching and Bush Hogging in Gainesville

Land around Gainesville grows back fast. Lake lots fill in with privet and briars under the hardwoods. Pasture at the edge of town turns to pine and sweetgum when it goes a few seasons without cutting. Under all of it sits red clay on rolling hills, and bare clay washes in a hard rain.

Wall Land Solutions clears land across Northeast Georgia, and Gainesville is part of our service area. Our machines are based in Toccoa, about 41 road miles up GA 365. Around Gainesville we do forestry mulching on wooded lots and acreage, plus bush hogging on grown-up fields. It is the same land clearing we do around Toccoa, with the mulch left on the ground. Land Clearing on Lake Lanier Lots

Lake Lanier wraps the west and north sides of Gainesville. The Corps of Engineers built Buford Dam and the lake in the 1950s. At full pool, 1,071 feet above sea level, the lake covers about 39,000 acres. The Corps owns most of the land around the shoreline.

That changes how a lake lot gets cleared. The strip between a yard and the water is often Corps land, not part of the lot. The Corps shoreline plan counts clearing trees or underbrushing there without a permit as unauthorized use. Mowing that land is not permitted either.

So the first step on a lake lot is finding the line. On your side of it, underbrushing beneath the hardwoods takes out the privet and briars. The big trees stay standing. Permits for Corps land come from the Corps operations office at the lake.

What Is Under the Brush Around Gainesville?

The NRCS soil survey maps most of the ground in Gainesville as Madison and Pacolet soils. Both carry a red clay subsoil, the classic ground of the Georgia Piedmont. The biggest single map unit in the city is a steep Pacolet and Tallapoosa association.

Another big share is mapped as moderately eroded, on slopes of 6 to 15 percent. Clay that steep sheds water fast once the cover is gone. Scraped bare, it can wash downhill in the first hard storm.

That is why mulching fits this ground. The mulcher grinds brush and small trees where they stand. The chips stay behind as a mulch layer over the clay, so the ground stays covered instead of scraped.

Bush Hogging Pasture in Poultry Country

By the end of World War II, Gainesville was known as the Poultry Capital of the World. By then, chickens had replaced cotton as the leading farm moneymaker here. The 2022 Census of Agriculture still counted 574 farms in Hall County, on about 43,900 acres. Poultry and eggs made up about 94 percent of farm sales.

Those farms hold about 14,900 acres of pasture and 13,100 acres of woodland. Hay was the county's top crop by acreage. Pasture and hay ground lose their edges when briars and saplings creep in from the fence rows.

Bush hogging a grown-up pasture with a heavy brush cutter on our track loader takes the field back. Where saplings have taken over, the forestry mulcher does the heavy cutting. The goal is open ground you can mow or graze again.

Who Issues Land Clearing Permits in Hall County?

Hall County keeps growing. It counted 203,136 people in the 2020 Census and 226,568 in the 2025 estimate. Permits for 1,996 new housing units were issued across the county in 2025, and 1,892 were single-family. Nearly two in three county residents live outside any city limits.

Out in the county, Hall County's Engineering Division handles land disturbance. Its guidance offers a minor land disturbance permit for less than an acre. Clearing or grading more than an acre goes through the county's Development Review process. Inside the city limits, the City of Gainesville issues its own land disturbance permits.

Machine digging and grading add one more step. Georgia 811 needs a locate request at least three business days before that work starts. The county office answers what your job needs, and we point you there.

Gainesville FAQ

Questions We Hear Around Gainesville

A few of the questions we hear most around Gainesville. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (678) 776-8002

Is Gainesville part of your service area?
Yes. Gainesville and the rest of Hall County sit inside our range of about 60 miles around Toccoa. That takes in Oakwood, Flowery Branch, Murrayville and Lula too. Call or text (678) 776-8002 to set up a free estimate.
How much does land clearing cost around Gainesville?
It depends on the land. Brush thickness, tree size, slope, acreage and access all move the price. A steep lake lot near the Corps line takes more care than an open pasture. We look at the property and put a free quote in writing before any work starts.
Can you clear the woods behind my Lake Lanier house?
On your side of the Corps line, yes. We can mulch out the privet and saplings and keep the mature trees. Land owned by the Corps of Engineers needs a Corps permit, and the Corps limits what can be cut there. Knowing where the line runs comes first.
What if my Hall County land has a creek on it?
Hall County keeps a 50-foot undisturbed buffer on both banks of a stream, measured from the top of the bank. Inside the city limits, Gainesville's plan checklist calls for a 75-foot buffer along state waters. We keep the mulcher out of a buffer unless a permit allows the work there.
What happens to the brush after clearing?
It stays on the ground as mulch. The mulcher grinds brush and small trees where they stand, so nothing is burned or hauled away. Hall County sits inside the state's summer burn ban, which stops land-clearing burns from May 1 through September 30. Clearing a lot ahead of a new house works the same way, and the mature trees you pick can stay.
