Forestry Mulching
We grind overgrown brush and small trees into mulch with mulching heads on two machines. The mulch stays on the ground, and the trees you mark stay standing.

Cornelia sits where US 441 meets GA 365, in the red clay hills of Habersham County. The land around town has a long farm history, first cotton and then the apple orchards Cornelia still celebrates. Ground that goes a few seasons without cutting fills with privet, briars, sweetgum and pine saplings. A few seasons after that, the saplings are small trees and the open ground is gone.
Wall Land Solutions offers land clearing in Cornelia, and the town is part of our service area. We work out of Toccoa, about 20 miles to the east by road. Our track loader and mini excavator both run forestry mulcher heads. Our main line is forestry mulching, which grinds brush in place and leaves the mulch on the ground. The federal soil survey maps most of the ground around Cornelia as Madison, Cecil, Pacolet and Lloyd soils. Each one sits on a red clay subsoil. Most of the map units carry an eroded or severely eroded label, so the clay sits close to the surface. Slope classes run from 2 percent on the gentle ground to 60 percent on the steepest ridges.
Chenocetah Mountain rises just southeast of downtown, topped by a stone fire tower the WPA built in the 1930s. Down along the creeks, the survey marks some bottomland soils as occasionally flooded. Georgia keeps a natural buffer along the banks of streams, and we work around it. Soft bottomland and steep ridge ground both change which machine fits the job.
Forestry mulching suits this ground, because the mulch stays on top as a cover over the clay. The mini excavator with its mulching head reaches steep slopes and ditch lines the track loader cannot.
Cornelia's farm story runs from cotton to apples. When the boll weevil hit cotton in the 1920s, local farmers turned to apple orchards. The Big Red Apple went up downtown in 1925, and the Big Red Apple Festival still comes each September.
Open fields around town do not stay open on their own. Skip a season or two of cutting, and briars and saplings creep in from the edges. Our bush hogging uses a heavy brush cutter on the track loader to cut a field back down. Where saplings have grown into small trees, the forestry mulcher head takes over.
A gravel drive on red clay and a slope takes a beating in a hard rain. Water runs down the middle of the drive and cuts ruts into the clay. Left alone, a rut turns into a washout.
Our gravel driveway repair regrades a rutted drive and re-crowns it so water runs off the sides. A supplier delivers new gravel, and we spread it and grade it. We also cut new driveways and farm roads through brush with the mulcher and the loader.
In unincorporated Habersham County, driveway permits for county roads go through the Planning and Development office. A drive onto a state route, such as GA 365, falls under the Georgia DOT.
Cornelia grew up around the railroad that came through in 1872, and it is still growing. The Census Bureau counted 4,503 people in 2020 and estimates about 5,460 for 2025. In the same estimates, Habersham County passed 50,000 people. By Census survey estimates, about 44 percent of the town's homes were built before 1980.
For a new house, our site preparation clears brush off the lot and keeps the mature trees you mark. Inside city limits, the City of Cornelia's Building and Zoning office handles permits and zoning questions. The city also issues its own land disturbance permits under the state erosion rules.
Cornelia keeps a tree protection and landscaping ordinance too. Ask about it before clearing a wooded lot inside the city.
Outside the city, Habersham County's Planning and Development office runs building permits and the county's erosion rules. The state's one-acre rule has a catch: work within 200 feet of a stream can need a permit too. Either office can say whether a clearing job needs a permit, and we point you there first. Machine digging or grading also needs a Georgia 811 ticket at least three business days ahead.
