Land Clearing, Forestry Mulching and Bush Hogging in Cleveland

Cleveland sits at about 1,570 feet, and Yonah Mountain rises about 4 miles northeast of downtown. Around town, steep side slopes drop to creek bottoms. Leave a cabin lot or a back pasture alone, and privet, briars, vines and pine saplings close it in fast. On a steep White County slope, a farm tractor often cannot reach that growth.

Wall Land Solutions does land clearing around Toccoa and across Northeast Georgia, and Cleveland is part of our service area. Our track loader and our mini excavator both run a forestry mulcher head. Forestry mulching grinds the brush where it stands and leaves it on the ground as mulch. Call or text (678) 776-8002 for a free estimate on your Cleveland land.

Land clearing on Cleveland's red clay and steep slopes

The federal soil survey maps Hayesville soils across much of the ground around Cleveland. These are deep, well drained soils with a red clay subsoil. A good part of it is mapped as severely eroded, so the clay sits close to the surface.

On the mountainsides, the survey maps stony soils on slopes of 25 percent and up, some past 60 percent. Down along the creeks, the bottomland soils are mapped as subject to flooding.

The track loader works the gentler slopes. The mini excavator's mulching head reaches banks and ditch lines the loader cannot. Either way, the mulch stays on the ground as a cover layer over the clay.

Cabin lots and old farm fields across White County

White County has a lot of part-time homes. Census estimates count about 2,000 county homes kept for seasonal or occasional use, roughly one in seven. More than half of all homes in the county went up between 1990 and 2009.

A cabin that sits empty for weeks at a time can disappear behind brush. Underbrushing clears the privet, briars, vines and saplings under the big trees and keeps the canopy. The woods open back up, and the shade stays.

Historically, the mountain terrain kept most White County farms small. A valley pasture that misses a few cuttings grows up in brush and saplings. Bush hogging knocks a field back with a heavy brush cutter on the track loader. Saplings too thick for the cutter get the mulching head.

Do you need a land disturbance permit in White County?

In unincorporated White County, the county Planning Department handles land disturbance permits. The county counts clearing, grading, excavating and filling as land disturbing activity. Work over 1 acre needs an erosion control plan drawn by a licensed engineer. So does work within 200 feet of state waters.

Smaller jobs take a simpler path. A project under 1 acre, or on land zoned Agricultural, signs an exemption form. That path holds only when the work sits more than 200 feet from state waters. As of June 1, 2025, the county's Community and Economic Development Department inspects these permits.

White County holds most of the Chattahoochee River's headwater streams. On creek land, that 200-foot line matters. The state EPD lists the City of Cleveland as its own issuing authority for land disturbance inside the city limits. Either office tells you what your job needs, and we point you to the right one before work starts.

Site preparation on mountain lots around Cleveland

White County keeps adding people. It went from 28,003 residents in the 2020 Census to about 29,800 in the Census Bureau's 2025 estimate. Census figures also count about 1,100 county homes built in 2010 or later.

Site preparation opens up a wooded lot so you can see where the house and the drive belong. We mulch the brush and small trees off the building spot and keep the mature trees you want. Your builder and your surveyor can then read the ground.

On a slope near Yonah Mountain or up GA 75 toward Helen, that first look matters. A new driveway onto a county road needs a White County Public Works permit before any work in the right-of-way. Footings and septic lines come later, from other trades.

Communities and areas we serve around Cleveland: Helen, Sautee Nacoochee, Nacoochee Valley, Yonah Mountain, Mossy Creek, Leaf, Tesnatee, Benefit, Stovall Mill, Leo, Chattahoochee headwaters.

Cleveland FAQ

Questions We Hear Around Cleveland

A few of the questions we hear most around Cleveland. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (678) 776-8002

Do you work in Cleveland and the rest of White County?
Yes, Cleveland is part of our service area, about 30 miles west of Toccoa by road. The last stretch into town is GA 115. Helen and Sautee Nacoochee sit inside our area too. Call or text (678) 776-8002 to set up a free estimate.
What does land clearing cost in Cleveland?
It depends on the land. Slope, brush thickness, tree size, acreage and access up a mountain drive all move the price. We look at the job on a free estimate and put the quote in writing.
Can you clear a steep cabin lot near Helen or Yonah Mountain?
Often, yes. The mini excavator runs a mulching head on banks and slopes the track loader cannot reach. Some mountainsides around Cleveland are too steep for any machine, and we tell you that at the estimate.
Can you clear near a creek on White County land?
Yes, within the state's buffer rules. For land disturbing work, state rules set a 25-foot buffer along most creeks and 50 feet along trout streams. We keep the machines out of that buffer unless a permit allows the work. Inside 200 feet of state waters, White County also wants an erosion control plan.
Do you haul the brush away or burn it?
The brush stays on your land as mulch. The mulching head grinds it in place and leaves it as a layer over the soil. In Georgia, a land clearing burn calls for a permit or notice through the Georgia Forestry Commission. Mulching leaves nothing to burn.
